Introduction to CFL
As a center of language training, academic language skills, and intercultural communication competences, we share ILA’s commitment to linguistic diversity and academic excellence. We believe that multilingualism and intercultural competencies are essential 21st century skills for a strong and lasting human connection, enabling critical thinkers to understand and be understood in a global setting.
Fundamental to our mission is the provision of mandatory English courses to ensure students develop language skills essential for success in both academic and professional spheres. Moreover, we offer introductory courses in a wide range of foreign languages, including Chinese, Spanish, Arabic, Persian, German, Turkish, Japanese, and French. Through engaging curriculum and experienced instructors, we empower students to explore new linguistic horizons and embrace the richness of cross-cultural communication.
Keeping pace with contemporary technological trends, we focus on the creative and effective use of technology to promote language learning both inside and outside the classroom. With a focus on practical learning, our language programs emphasize doing rather than knowing, so that students learn to speak, listen, read, and write in ways that are immediately useful in a real-world setting. We are confident that the academic English, foreign language, and certificate courses offered by the Center will make a valuable and much-needed contribution to encouraging creative curiosity and transformative understanding between people, both locally and globally.
CFL Mission and Philosophy
The Center for Languages at the School of Liberal Arts aims to foster linguistic and cultural competence, nurturing a lasting fondness for languages and the diverse cultures they represent. We are firm believers that all students must acquire advance language skills to embrace the global inclusive spirit and contribute to the international community progressively. The exploration of foreign languages is an interdisciplinary endeavor that inherently enables participants to approach issues from a global vantage point; it equips them with a heightened awareness of their place in the world by instilling an appreciation for differing perspectives, a deeper comprehension of their own culture and the broader global landscape. Every language provides a unique insight into other ways of living and thinking from which we can learn. These diverse perspectives help foster communal spirit and break down language barriers.
"One language sets you in a corridor for life; two languages open every door along the way" ( Frank Smith)
