She is doctor in English Philology and Senior Lecturer in English Philology of the University of Alicante. Moreover, she is Research Fellow of the Linguistics and Modern Languages department of the University of South Africa (UNISA). She has directed various research projects on Critical Analysis of Discourse and educational innovation, funded by public entities. She published about a hundred publications that include books, articles in national and international reviews, book chapters, papers in congresses, reviews and outreach Works, added to the fact that she has created and lead the research group Critical Analysis of Multimodal Discourse.

María Martínez Lirola obtained the Teaching Excellence Award of the Faculty of Arts in 2010, given by the Generalitat Valenciana. She has participated in congresses and given conferences and seminars in Spain and in dozens of countries. Moreover, she has carried out research stays in order to carry out researches in the following universities:
